Local personality

George Mellor  -  President of Hollinsclough Sheep Dog Trails

Mr George Mellor is a very well known, much respected personality in Hollinsclough. George has lived in Hollinsclough for all but the first fourteen months of his life. In 1999 he celebrated (as did the whole village) his eightieth birthday. Many of George's friends were delighted to be invited to a celebration held at the village hall in his honour.  George left school at fourteen and set to work at New Barns Farm for his grandfather. He was able to continue running the farm after his grandfather retired. One of George's strongest memories is of the winter of 1947 when it snowed heavily for weeks on end. Georges wife was taken to Buxton to give birth to his sun, but the snow came and George did not see his new son for 6 weeks. During his farming life George kept a small flock of Suffolk sheep and one year he remembers managing to rear 24 lambs from 12 sheep. His best sheep dog Meg lived for 16 years and was excellent at rounding up both cows and sheep. Although George does not remember sheep dog trails taking place in his younger days, he has for many years followed the local trails as an enthusiastic spectator and for the past six years support those at Hollinsclough where for 2000 he is the trail president.
