The name of Monyash is believed to come from 'Many Ash Trees'.
Monyash is located between Bakwell and Longnor located on the limestone plateau of Flagg
Moor. It is an open village and an exposed place, lying in a shallow basin which forms the
head of Lathkill Dale. Nowadays Monyash is a quiet, unassuming village with a small
school, parish church (St Leonards), village hall and much enjoyed access to Lathkill
Dale.
There is a summer well dressing of three wells, contact Teddi
Carlson 01298 814356, and a festival market in May. The Bishop of Derby the Rt
Revd Johnathon Bailey dedicated newley referbished bells in the church in March of 2002,
bell ringing practice is from seven on Friday evenings and all are welcome. A new vicar
the Rev John Goldsmith was licensed to the parish from September 2002.

Lead Minig Industry in Monyash
In 1340 to encourage the growth of the lead mining industry, William de Lynford
obtained the grant for a weekly market and an annual 3 day fair. The old market cross
still stands on the village green, weathered by the ages its base made from the old
village stocks. When the lead mining industry was at its peak in Derbyshire the Barmote
Court a sort of miners parliament sat at Monyash to settle claims or disputes relevant to
mines in the High Peak. The Barmote Court met twice a year with a jury consisting of two
dozen experienced miners of which one dozen were chosen for each hearing.
Also close by is the stone circle of Arbour Low. In the past
Monyash possessed a thriving market and was the centre of the lead mining industry in the
High Peak. On the village notice board you can find details and fixtures for the Monyash
Bulls Football Club who play in the Hope Valley Football League at division B. There is
also a thrieving quilters club, new members should contact Maureen Gee or Pat McDonald.

Monyash is an example of a village which grew round a green
containing a pond for watering cattle as at Foolow and Hartington. The plan of the village
radiating out from the pond or mere, indicates its origins as being agricultural. This is
confirmed by the name 'Monyash', the ash part indicating a widespread conversion of forest
into farmland.
The mere shows the way in which farmers over the centuries have
countered water shortages in the dry upland parishes. these meres, some of which
cover nearly an acre in area, were apparently made by deepening the rocky ground around
the site of a natural spring. The old candle factory can still be seen at a three roads
crossway, just west of the village.
