Taddington a local village

The village was listed in the Doomsday book as 'Tadintune' . Taddington is in the united benefice of Monyash, Chelmorton and Flagg. It lies below High Well with Flagg and Monyash close by across the limestone plateau.

Taddington has grown up around farming and many of the buildings reflect that heritage. The Ordnance Survey map of 1878 shows three public houses a smithy and Weslyn Chapel. Today the village still shows its strip fields and has many small back lanes and pathways which lead to High Well. The local limestone is very evident and an S curve has been created in the otherwise linear Main Road by teams of Oxon turning ploughs in centuries gone by.

Bronze Age burial mounds and a chamber tomb at Five Wells are clear proof of very early settlement on the high moor. The Five Wells tomb chamber built of large stone slabs or cists is one of the largest Neolithic burial sites in the country. The tomb sits at 430m and has a clear view of the valley of the Wye. At least twelve burials were made in it and local belief is that the bones were taken out for ceremonial purposes at different times of the year.

The Parish church is St Michaels - Rev'd John Goldsmith arrived late 2002, there is an active primary school in the village as well as a Methodist church, public house and a shop. The primary school recieved great praise from an Ofsted report late in 2002.

The TOP club is for the over 60s and meets on alternate Thursdays in Taddington Village Institute at 2:30pm. A light tea is provided to round off each meeting.
